On trips, hikes, marches and other outdoor activities where you are at the mercy of stress and weather, it is of primary importance to pay attention to the well-being of your feet.
Traditional cotton is not the best choice for heavy use, as it traps moisture and doesn't breathe very well. Read below for our tips on choosing socks for hiking, trekking and other strenuous outdoor activities.
So which socks should I choose?
Make sure your socks have the following features:
- Highly moisture-wicking to keep your feet dry, warm and free from chafing
- Fits well on the foot, doesn't roll around
- It is breathable
- It is warm, but not too warm.
- Possibly padded underfoot and heel
- It is durable
- Sufficiently long shaft to prevent debris from getting inside shoes and socks
Merino wool is a safe choice
Merino wool is known for its excellent properties and ecological properties. Merino wool is sheared from merino sheep. The wool keeps the sheep comfortable in both the cold and rainy winters and the hot summers. These same properties of wool caress your feet.
Merino wool wicks moisture away from your feet effectively and breathes well, keeping your feet dry. In addition, your feet will be warm in winter and cool in summer. Merino wool is also an antibacterial material, so odors will be eliminated and you can wear your socks for several days in a row. Unlike regular wool, Merino wool does not itch.
Hukkasukka's merino wool socks are a great choice for hiking: they fit snugly, are seamless, and are reinforced at the sole and heel.

Two-sock combination
Some people like to wear two socks on top of each other when hiking, which further reduces friction on the foot, as the friction is concentrated between the two socks. Two socks can also help with moisture transfer.
For example, you can wear a thin sock underneath and a thicker merino wool sock on top.
Or, a little more surprisingly: a thicker merino wool sock or regular wool sock underneath and a thinner sock, for example made of bamboo or cotton, on top. In this case, the wool, which has excellent moisture-wicking properties, transfers moisture to the sock on top and your feet stay dry. In addition, you get a soft layer of wool against your skin. We recommend merino wool instead of regular wool, as merino wool does not itch.
Reinforced bamboo sock
The reinforced bamboo sock of the Hukkasuka fits snugly on the foot and is seamless, so you avoid chafing and your feet will feel comfortable throughout the run.
The sock is reinforced with terry cloth at the bottom and heel, so the soles of your feet won't hurt and there won't be any chafing.
Bamboo is an excellent material for exercise: it wicks moisture away from the foot effectively, is warm in winter and cool in summer.
